Our licensed brokers are available for free consultations in English and Spanish at 1-800-380-6821. What is Medicare? Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older, as well as certain younger people with disabilities. It is divided into Part A (hospital insurance), Part B (medical insurance), Part C (Medicare Advantage), and Part D (prescription drug coverage). When should I enroll in Medicare? Most people have a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period that begins 3 months before the month they turn 65, includes their birthday month, and ends 3 months after. Missing this window without qualifying coverage can result in permanent late enrollment penalties. What is Medicare Advantage (Part C)? Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. They combine Part A and Part B coverage and usually include Part D. Many plans offer additional benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and OTC cards. Plans have provider networks. What is Medicare Supplement (Medigap)? Medicare Supplement plans work alongside Original Medicare to help pay out-of-pocket costs like copays, coinsurance, and deductibles. There are no network restrictions — you can see any doctor who accepts Medicare anywhere in the United States. What is Medicare Part D? Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage. It is available as a standalone plan for people on Original Medicare or Medigap, or it may be included in a Medicare Advantage plan. Each plan has a formulary — a list of covered drugs. Can I change my Medicare plan? Yes. The Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7 each year. You can also qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you experience a qualifying event such as moving, losing other coverage, or if your current plan exits your area. What is a Special Enrollment Period for Medicare? A Special Enrollment Period (SEP) allows you to enroll in or change Medicare plans outside of the Annual Enrollment Period. Former AvMed Medicare members currently qualify for an SEP because AvMed discontinued its Medicare Advantage plans in Florida on January 1, 2026. Do I need a referral to see a specialist with Medicare? With Original Medicare and most Medicare Supplement plans, you do not need a referral to see a specialist. With Medicare Advantage HMO plans, you typically do need a referral from your primary care physician. How do I find a Medicare broker in Miami?
