AvMed Medicare Is Ending in 2026: What Florida Seniors Need to Know

Reflecting on My Journey With AvMed Medicare Florida

When I think back to my journey with AvMed Medicare Florida, it brings back over a decade of memories and growth. From 2010 to 2019, AvMed wasn't just where I worked — it was where I learned, grew, and built lifelong relationships with Florida seniors navigating Medicare.

That experience laid the foundation for my career as a licensed Medicare insurance broker, helping thousands of Florida residents find the right plan for their needs.

Today, I'm writing not just as a former AvMed employee, but as someone deeply connected to the people who are going through this major change right now.

AvMed Medicare Advantage Plans Ended on January 1, 2026

In early 2025, AvMed announced it would discontinue all Medicare Advantage plans in Florida — and that day has now come. As of January 1, 2026, AvMed Medicare Advantage coverage has officially ended.

This affects thousands of Florida seniors across Miami-Dade, Broward, and the rest of the state who relied on AvMed for their healthcare.

If you're one of them, you may be asking:

  • "Did I lose my doctor?"

  • "How do I get coverage now?"

  • "Is it too late to switch?"

The answer to that last question: No, it is not too late.

⚠️ Still Don't Have a New Plan? You Can Still Enroll.

This is the most important thing to know: you are not stuck without coverage.

When a Medicare plan exits the market the way AvMed did, CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) automatically grants affected members a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). This means you do not have to wait until the next Annual Enrollment Period (October–December) to get a new plan.

Former AvMed members can enroll in a new Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, or Part D plan right now — and coverage can begin quickly.

Understanding Your Medicare Options After AvMed Ends in Florida

When a Medicare provider exits the market, it can feel overwhelming. But it's also a chance to reassess your healthcare needs and find a plan that fits you even better. Here's how to navigate your next steps:

✅ 1. Know That You Have a Special Enrollment Period

Because AvMed terminated its Medicare plans, you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. You do not need to wait for October. A licensed local broker can walk you through your options and get you enrolled quickly — at no cost.

✅ 2. Reevaluate Your Healthcare Priorities

Before switching to a new plan, ask yourself:

  • Which doctors or specialists are must-keep?

  • Are you managing chronic conditions that require specific coverage?

  • What prescriptions are essential to your care?

Answering these questions helps identify which Medicare Advantage or Supplement plan aligns best with your needs.

✅ 3. Compare Medicare Plans in Florida

There are many reputable Medicare Advantage plans available in Florida that offer similar — or better — benefits than AvMed did, including:

  • $0 or low monthly premiums

  • Expanded prescription drug coverage

  • Dental, vision, and hearing benefits

  • Grocery, utility, or OTC card benefits (for eligible members)

  • Chronic condition care programs

Many plans have improved their benefits for Florida seniors, with some offering wellness programs and lower out-of-pocket costs.

✅ 4. Work With a Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker in Florida

Choosing a new plan can feel confusing — but you don't have to do it alone. Working with a licensed Medicare broker ensures you get:

  • Personalized comparisons across multiple carriers

  • Verification that your doctors are in-network before you enroll

  • A check that your prescriptions are covered

  • Expert guidance at no cost to you

We help ensure you don't lose access to your doctors or medications during your transition from AvMed.

✅ 5. Ask Questions — Get Clarity

Every situation is unique. Don't hesitate to ask:

  • "Will my doctor take this new plan?"

  • "Can I keep my same prescriptions?"

  • "Will my premiums increase?"

Asking the right questions early helps you make a smooth transition and avoid any further gap in coverage.

Why AvMed's Exit Matters — and How to Move Forward

The end of AvMed Medicare in Florida is more than a business shift — it's a personal change for thousands of seniors who have trusted the company for years.

Having worked inside AvMed and now serving as a broker, I understand both sides of this transition. My mission is to help you find a new plan that protects your care, your doctors, and your peace of mind — and to do it as quickly as possible so you don't go another day without coverage.
