What Replaced AvMed Medicare in Florida?

The short answer: AvMed Medicare was not replaced by a single plan. When AvMed discontinued all Medicare Advantage plans in Florida on January 1, 2026, former members were free to choose any Medicare plan available in their area — and there are several strong options. The Health Experts Insurance has been helping former AvMed members find replacement plans at no cost.

What Happened to AvMed Medicare in Florida?

In early 2025, AvMed announced it would exit the Medicare Advantage market in Florida entirely, effective January 1, 2026. This affected thousands of seniors across Miami-Dade, Broward, and the rest of the state.

AvMed did not merge with another carrier or transfer members to a replacement plan. Members were required to actively choose a new plan or be returned to Original Medicare — with no prescription drug coverage and no network.

The Medicare Plans Replacing AvMed in Florida

Former AvMed members in Miami-Dade and Broward now have access to Medicare Advantage plans from several strong carriers.

Here are the most popular replacements our licensed brokers are enrolling former AvMed members into right now:

Humana Medicare Advantage

One of the largest Medicare Advantage carriers in Florida with a wide provider network, strong Part D formularies, and competitive extra benefits including dental, vision, hearing, and OTC cards. Many plans offer $0 monthly premiums.

UnitedHealthcare (AARP Medicare Advantage)

Wide network coverage across South Florida including major health systems. Strong telehealth options, Renew Active fitness benefit, and competitive prescription drug coverage.

Aetna Medicare Advantage

Expanded significantly in South Florida. Strong star ratings, CVS pharmacy integration, SilverSneakers fitness program, and competitive dental and vision benefits.

Cigna Medicare Advantage

Solid chronic condition support programs, $0 premium plans available in Miami-Dade and Broward, and strong specialty medication coverage.

Devoted Health

Florida-based Medicare Advantage carrier with high member satisfaction scores, a dedicated personal guide for each member, and a strong network in South Florida.

Can I Still Switch? I Haven't Enrolled in Anything Yet.

Yes — and this is the most important thing to know.

When AvMed exited the market, CMS automatically granted all affected members a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). This means you do not have to wait until October to enroll in a new plan. You can enroll right now, and coverage can begin as soon as the first of the following month.

You are not stuck on Original Medicare with no coverage. Contact a licensed broker today to use your SEP before it expires.

How to Find the Right AvMed Replacement Plan

The right replacement plan depends entirely on your specific situation:

  • Which doctors do you need to keep? Networks vary significantly between carriers.

  • What medications do you take? Formularies differ by plan — the same drug can cost very differently on different plans.

  • What did you value most about AvMed? $0 premium? Dental coverage? OTC benefits? We match you to plans with similar benefits.

Our licensed Florida brokers check all of this for you before you enroll — at no cost.
