Still Haven’t Switched Your Medicare Plan? You May Qualify for a Special Enrollment Period

If you were enrolled in a plan won't be offered in 2026 such as, AvMed, HealthSpring, or Aetna and your plan was terminated, you may still have time to make a change — even if you missed the Annual Enrollment Period.
Many people don’t realize that when a plan ends, they automatically qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). This SEP allows you to review your options and enroll in a new plan after your old one has ended, without having to wait for the next enrollment window.
Why You Still Have Time to Change Your Plan
When a Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug Plan terminates, Medicare gives affected members additional time to select a new plan. This protects beneficiaries from losing coverage or being stuck in a plan that no longer meets their needs.
If your AVMED, HealthSpring, Aetna plan ended and you haven’t chosen a replacement plan yet, you may still be eligible to enroll right now.
But this SEP is time-sensitive — once it ends, you’ll have to wait for another enrollment period unless you qualify under a different circumstance.
What You Can Do During This SEP
During your Special Enrollment Period, you can:
Enroll in a new Medicare Advantage plan
Switch to a different Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug Plan
Return to Original Medicare
Add or change Part D drug coverage
This is your chance to ensure you have the coverage you need for 2025 — including your doctors, prescriptions, and preferred benefits.
